About Anne Beffort

Anne Beffort (* Neudorf, 4 July 1880, † Davos, 20 July 1966) was a Luxembourgish educator, literary writer and biographer. On 7 March 1908, she made history as the first Luxembourgish woman to earn a doctorate, with her thesis on the French poet Alexandre Soumet. Beffort was a founding member and one of the first teachers at the Lycée de Jeunes Filles (later Lycée Robert Schuman). In 1934, she played a key role in establishing the Société des écrivains luxembourgeois d’expression française, and she remained a strong advocate for French culture, even during the German occupation of Luxembourg in World War II.

Throughout her career, she promoted gender equality and highlighted the importance of education in the emancipation of girls and women. Anne Beffort was an exceptional intellectual, a courageous woman, and an unparalleled teacher.

In 1948, she was awarded the French Legion of Honour by Robert Schuman in recognition of her efforts to support French culture during the German occupation of Luxembourg.
