Admission criteria overview

For master and bachelor prospective candidates

The admission of any applicant depends on their personal situation. In addition, the prerequisites may be different depending on the applicant’s nationality, the origin of their degree and their residence.

Please read the detailed information below carefully and choose the option corresponding to your profile.

Bachelor programmes

Diploma

You must have graduated from your secondary school diploma and be in possession, of at least your secondary school certificate of achievement. Any student graduating after the deadline for application (30 April of the year of application) cannot be considered for admission.

– Secondary school diploma recognition:
To be eligible to apply for a Bachelor programme, you must submit a request for recognition of the equivalence of your diploma to the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

Please note that this procedure takes a minimum of 6 weeks. You will need this document to submit your application, so we would recommend that you start the procedure a few months before applying to the University of Luxembourg. Be aware that this procedure requires you to be in possession of your secondary school certificate of achievement.

If you have not yet obtained your equivalence document from the Luxembourgish Ministry of Education by the application deadline for your chosen study programme, you will not be considered eligible by the University of Luxembourg.

Theoretically, a request needs to be introduced at the latest by 01/03 of the application year in question, to receive the document in time for upload.

Language certificates

All candidates must prove proficiency in the teaching languages of the chosen programme at the University of Luxembourg. The language skills required for each programme are listed on the dedicated programme web page, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Please note that all listed languages are required.

Tuition fees

Please note that the University of Luxembourg does not practice international student fees. The tuition fees for each programme are listed on the dedicated programme web page.

However, international students are required to be affiliated to the Luxembourgish social security system, which will raise the amount of fees they need to account for.

Diploma

– Secondary school diploma recognition:
Any student with a secondary school diploma which was not issued by the Luxembourgish Ministry of Education must submit a request for recognition of the equivalence of your diploma to the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth. Be aware that this procedure requires you to be in possession of your secondary school certificate of achievement.

Please note that you can submit your application without the document. If accepted, you will receive a conditional acceptance letter, which requires you to deliver the recognition to finalise your enrolment (provided the other conditions for admission are reached as well: social security, etc…)

NB: The following schools do not follow the official curriculum of the Ministry of Education, and require a diploma recognition:
– International School (International Baccalaureate)
– Ecole privée Grandjean
– St George’s International School
– Lycée français du Luxembourg (Vauban)
– Fräi-ëffentlech-Waldorfschoul Lëtzebuerg
– other schools may apply depending on the education curriculum

Please note that if you have a valid resident permit in Luxembourg or if you are eligible for an exemption of resident permit, you can be considered as a European applicant.

Master programmes

Register of titles

In preparation for enrolment in a Master’s programme at the University of Luxembourg, any student who does not hold:
– a Bachelor’s degree that corresponds to at least 180 ECTS according to the Bologna Framework
– a Bachelor’s degree issued by a higher education institution located in another EU/EEA Member State or in the Swiss Confederation
– a Bachelor’s degree recognised by the competent authorities of that state and certifies a higher education qualification recognised by the same competent authorities

must apply for the diploma to be registered in the higher education section of the register of certificates kept by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research in Luxembourg.

The register of titles can only be requested after you have been accepted into the University as part of your immigration procedure, after you obtain your authorisation to stay.

    Applications to the University of Luxembourg are subject to an online application through our admission platform.

  • Residence permit

    On their arrival in Luxembourg, applicants must submit their temporary authorisation to stay (AST) issued by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to the Admissions Office in the Student Department.

  • Diploma recognition

    Students wishing to enrol in the University of Luxembourg must request recognition of their secondary school leaving certificate, if and only if the diploma was not issued by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education.
